Pic Of A Glock - The GLOCK G46 was a secret for a long time, only found in government applications. For the first time, the Austrian manufacturer offers a pistol with a rotating barrel and decocking system. We tested the new pistol of the German police in Saxony-Anhalt. Read on to find out how she fares on the range!

The G46 is GLOCK's answer to the German police technical requirements (TR) for service pistols. It's a bit late because most German governments bought new generation service pistols a long time ago. However, GLOCK was able to score at least in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt (see our article). About 8,600 G46 pistols will be shipped there by 2021. It is still said that the TR Police at that time was described as the "head of the department" from Austria in the world.

Rounds are also found in the forward slide area as well as on the right side of the G46.

One thing that is valid in the technical specification that is currently missing from the GLOCK is the fact that the pistol can be loaded without pulling the trigger. While not a big mistake for experienced shooters after a security check, the police see it differently. At least you can teach a training program based on how to use the trigger to shoot. This is another story about the image behind the G46 film, much of which has been released since the first images of the G46 made the rounds. They quickly thought it was an incendiary push, but the truth was obvious, albeit less emotional and a little more vulnerable. Of course, the gun can only be fired after the film has been retracted. Therefore, it cannot be accidentally removed, for example in a case. To remove the gun, a small hole is also made on the left side of the gun, so there is a manual safety in various internet sessions.

It also includes a new GLOCK series if the gun is disassembled. While all other pistols from the Austrian manufacturer use the Browning-SIG-Petter locking system, the G46 is based on a rotary bolt. However, this does not apply to information on technical requirements. According to GLOCK, this principle has been considered for a long time, because it can have a small rod axis. In the past, there were manufacturers that tried the rotary system in their weapons, such as B&T TSP, Colt All American, Beretta 8000 Cougar or Mauser M2, all of which disappeared from the market. Meanwhile, the Italian Beretta PX-4Storm and the Slovak Grand Power K100 are still available.

Compared to the G19 (left), it is clearly visible that the axis of the barrel is less rotated.

Although master craftsman John Moses Browning pioneered the development of the revolver action pistol as early as 1897, the Roth-Steyr 1907 was the first revolver-barreled pistol produced in a "larger" size. It also has a fully loaded trigger like a GLOCK. Very nice pistol, shows what could have been done with less manufacturing effort back in the day. The Roth-Steyr pistol also closes the circle in Austria. By the way, rotating pistols are said to be more accurate, because the barrel does not slide and recoil like the Browning-SIG-Petter system, but instead rotates. The rotary locking system is said to be affected by heavy wear, especially if the locking plates or accessories are not selected properly. According to the manufacturer, the closing plates and locking elements have been repaired. According to GLOCK, the Ulm Proof House has certified three pistols, each loaded with 10,000 rounds, free of defects such as cracks, damage, or gauge wear as error-free cycling (only 5 total).

Anyone shooting the G46 for the first time is unlikely to be impressed by its trigger features. Looking at the TriggerScan, it's clear that we needed about 137.56 oz / 3900 g of pull weight and about 15 mm of trigger travel to break the trigger. But this is determined by the technical requirements, with a minimum trigger resistance of 30 N, which corresponds to a trigger pull weight of 104 oz / 2950 g. According to TR, trigger travel should be between 0.39”-0.59” / 10-15mm on the first shot. While we're on the subject, let's also mention that the trigger adjustment should be 0.157" / 4mm. It remains to be seen if this makes it easier for the user to hit the target or gives them more control over the One rhetorical question for manufacturers or users, just think about it.As an option, GLOCK also offers the G46 with an 88.18 oz / 2.5 kg trigger pull weight and short trigger travel.

Although the GLOCK 46 looks less complicated, according to the GLOCK concept, each component has been handled with care. The new successor to Deutsch-Wagram therefore has 37 separate parts, so only 3 more than the G19. By the way, if you want to go deeper into the G46 and its rotating system, you can take a closer look at the published patent EP 3179193A1. We measured 0.014” / 0.36mm of displacement in the brass compression cylinder using a chamber gauge provided by Triebel, and the displacement was almost perfectly centered. By the way, TR sets 0.011" / 0.3mm and 0.007" / 0.2mm high.

However, the firing pin unit cannot be fully extended, so it is not lost. Of course, this can only be done while opening the movie...

The G46 is the same size as the G19, with a 15-round magazine. The highly resistant nDLC coating (Diamond like Carbon), which became standard in the 5th generation, can also be found in this service version. The magazine release button is reversible for left-handers, and the stop tape is visible on both sides, like the GLOCK Gen5 pistols. The 3.9” / 100mm long barrel features the brand new GLOCK Marksman Barrel (GMB) that promises increased accuracy. The firing pin, which was seen in its characteristic spear shape until Gen4, has changed to a round shape. Our test gun came with fixed steel sights that had bright dots on them.

First contact with the shooting range was at GLOCK, the birthplace of the G46. After the Deutsch-Wagram welcome, which started with technical advice, we ended up in the indoor shooting range. Here we were able to shoot the G46 and G19 with several RUAG Action 4 cartridges. Yes, the G46 seems a little quieter when shooting. 0.9oz / 26g extra weight compared to the G19 may not be the reason. Barrel rotation seems to have a positive effect on firing behavior. Upon returning home, the appropriate test follows. Since the G46 is a compact pistol, we chose the 15m range using a sandbag for the proper test. So far, 7 cartridges have been used, including 4 factory cartridges, which, like the pistol, are of the TR brand. The 0.94”/  24mm diameter RUAG Action 5 ammo scored the best average of the two 5-shot classifications with a solid 94 gram projectile. Second place in the direct test remained in the same range: RUAG Action 4 and the official SeCa cartridges achieved 1.3" / 33 mm groups. This was followed by the lightweight form 89 gr MEN Quick Speed and 1 .49" / 38 mm, it also achieved the highest strength value of all test cartridges with 511 J. All loads averaged 1.53" / 39mm. No failures were recorded with the G46 despite other motivational training.
